March shows: Rhizome and beyond!

Hey y’all. I hope everyone’s hanging in while we all keep our eyes on the rising fascism. Read up on your civil rights against the police and hug your trans friends. <3

I’m grateful to keep the ball rolling on my music-making, as things start to pick back up. I’ve been bad about letting you all know — I had a fun indie-pop gig with Dono Dono at Songbyrd and a jazz fusion thing with Gabe Koempel at Wild Days in February — and vow to do better going forward!!

Much love —

J

Month at a glance: a fun free-jazz-ish gig tonight at Rhizome and a casual gig this Saturday; an exciting album release septet show this Sunday at Rhizome, with another in NYC the following Friday; and my second-ever Kennedy Center appearance on the 21st (chock full of DEI wokeness!!!!!)

SHOWS COMING UP

A COUPLE QUICK HITS ~ ——

TONIGHT, March 4, I’m at Rhizome DC playing a free improvised set with my forever brother/partner Abe and our friend/collaborator Tracy Lisk, a drummer from Philly. Doors at 7, music at 7:30, and we’re on first (I think). The rest of the bill is noise- and drone- focused, with a German noise duo, RAFGAK, headlining! This one’s for the weird kids!!

I’ll also be posting up at Abe’s weekly gig at Lost Generation Brewery on Saturday, doing some jazz standards on violin as part of a quartet, this Saturday. No cover charge or minimums; we go 7:30-10:30 with a couple breaks. Come drink some beer!

AND THEN THERE WERE SEVEN ———

I’m VERY pumped to play again with the Abe Mamet Septet this Sunday, again at Rhizome DC. We’re celebrating the release of Abe’s sophomore album as a leader, which I co-produced. I’m playing acoustic violin in a number of partially-composed, partially-improvised tunes that range from lush and sweet to angular and spare. You can check out the lead single, with a quick little video I threw together with Abe. →

The group will be traveling to NYC the following week to play at Nublu Classic on Friday the 14th! Info for both shows linked below. Posters by yours truly :)

THE WOKEST, MOST DEI SHOW YOU’VE EVER SEEN, MR. PRESIDENT ———

I don’t have too much info on this yet, but mark your calendars: I’ll be playing electric violin with a group led by the fantastic pianist/composer/activist Alfred Yun (with whom I’ve collaborated previously on his Flowers For Palestine collective/project) — March 21, 6pm at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. I haven’t performed at the KC since backing up Misfit Marti at a Black Culture-focused festival at the REACH in like… 2022 or something. Different KC these days. The times, they a-change.

The proceeds from the show will be going to a charity that the Kennedy Center’s new board chair would probably not be a fan of. See you there.
